Getting links to your site is essential for your business: if you have links on the right sites, they will bring you direct traffic, but these links will also improve your position in search results on Google and other search engines. The basic idea is the Google offers better positions to sites with a lot of incoming links: the number of links is an indication to Google that the site is relevant.
CAN I GET FREE LINKS?
Yes, there are plenty of sites around that may be willing to link to you. In the UK there are sites like startpage.co.uk. You will find similar sites in many countries around the globe. Others that might be willing to you: businesses you work with, the local Tourist Office, other B&B's in the area.
There are webmaster who will mail/spam you to suggest creating reciprocal links; there is little or no value in this. There's an easy rule of thumb: if a link that you put on your site does not add value for your site visitors, then don't put it there,
HOW DO YOU MAXIMIZE RESULTS?
If you get a link, this may not work well:
Champoussin Apartment - > read more (That is because Google will only associate the words 'read more' with your site).
What will work a lot better is:
B&B Het Torentje
Or what might even be better when including your location (in this case 'Wageningen'):
B&B Het Torentje Wageningen
Try to get the keywords into the link titel (or 'anchor text' as this is called).
IS ANY LINK AS GOOD AS ANOTHER?
Definitely not. You should stay away from what are called 'link farms.' Sites where the only purpose is to create links. Google recognizes that type of sites and may even punish you for being included on such a site.
There are a lot of cowboys out there in the link-trading business. So: be warned.
